Analyzing Groundwater Flow

Groundwater flow to wells and springs provides almost 40% of drinking water in the United States—and about 99% of the world's fresh liquid water is groundwater. Analyzing groundwater flow at scales that range from large regional aquifer systems to seepage into a small site development excavation can provide fundamental information for the success of a project.

Analyzing Contaminant Transport

Deliberate waste disposal (e.g. landfills) and accidental releases (e.g. UST leaks) can introduce contaminants into soil and into underlying groundwater, where a dissolved chemical plume can be transported to receptors (wells, wetlands) some distance away. Analysis of plume behavior can be instrumental in evaluating potential human health and ecological impacts, identifying sources, and evaluating potential remediation strategies.

Developing a Quantitative Conceptual Site Model

For any groundwater project you must develop a sound Conceptual Site Model (CSM). But to be useful your CSM must grow beyond a simple words-and-pictures description of your site to a description that contains data, processes, rates, area, mass, volume, timing, velocity, trends, and other metrics. That description is referred to as a Quantitative Conceptual Site Model (QCSM).

Groundwater data analysis tools range from hand calculator formulas and spreadsheets up through complex 3D numerical computer models. Simpler tools are better because they:

  • Can be built faster & run faster
  • Require less data
  • Cover the majority of groundwater questions
